Arvind Saraswati is an Assistant Professor of Hospitality & Tourism at the Banasidas Chandiwala Institute of Hotel Management and Catering Technology, an Academic Coordinator of the undergraduate program in Hotel Management, and the school’s Research & Consultancy Coordinator. He’s also the editor of the “Indian Journal of Applied Hospitality and Tourism Research”, an annual peer-review research journal dedicated to publishing quality research in tourism, travel & hospitality.
In this brief interview, Arvind expresses his view on the role of audiovisual communication in the context of tourism and how a festival like ART&TUR can contribute resilience and sustainability of the industry, while also discussing the history of his collaboration with the festival and revealing a little about himself and his projects.
What do you think is the role of audiovisual communication in the context of tourism?
A: Audiovisual communication plays an important role in promoting cultural and natural heritage among travellers. It provides tangible evidence of the products and services offered by tourism.
Through audiovisual communication, people are not only able to see and hear about a destination but feel it as well. This helps in creating an image of the destination in their mind, which ultimately influences the selection decision-making.
How can ART&TUR contribute to increasing sustainability and resilience in tourism?
A: Attending a film festival to watch films, meeting everyone involved, or part-taking in the festival’s activities is, by itself, a tourism film of sorts and a novel idea to promote the destinations where the festival is being held, establishing sustainability and resilience among them.
In this sense, ART&TUR contributes to the visibility of destinations, by providing some prestige and worldwide recognition, which would otherwise be difficult to achieve through other tourism typologies.
Hosting destinations for the festival are carefully selected in such a way as to provide an unbiased opportunity for different Portuguese provinces to increase their visibility on various channels and showcase their natural and cultural heritage.
Categorically designed award segments also provide an opportunity to highlight and share relevant issues related to sustainability, which are key to increase resilience in tourism. The occasional inclusion of several innovative initiatives, such as Art & Factory, also proves to be an important milestone in building sustainability and increasing resilience.
Additionally, the festival provides strong support and encouragement for creatives in the field. It stands as an incentive to professionalism in the development of new tourism communication products, where creativity and innovation are encouraged, generating more and more visibility to destinations and relevant issues.
How many years have you collaborated with ART&TUR and what would you highlight about this collaboration?
A: I’ve been associated with ART&TUR since 2016 and I’ve been enjoying every step of this journey. Contributing to the festival as a juror, and rating films for the past 5 years has been a wonderful experience.
The key highlight of this collaboration would be the time spent with the other attendees – filmmakers, tourism representatives and the film commission. Knowing what other people are doing to support their destinations, through art and film, is very informative and interesting.
I also felt that it is an incredible opportunity to discover various districts and provinces of Portugal both culturally and socially.
In my perspective, ART&TUR isn’t just a festival but a global mission to promote destinations worldwide and to establish sustainability and resilience in this sector.
